Penetrating Liquids

Liquidos-Penetrantes

The penetrating liquids are used by two techniques:

  • Contrast liquid
  • Fluorescent liquid

Additionally, we have a range of: Liquids applicable to temperatures up to 200ºC, which facilitates the inspection of hot components without having to wait for them to cool down or having to reheat them to continue welding after the inspection.

Contrast Liquids (Red over White Background)

Step 1: The Red Penetrating Liquid is applied, letting it sit for a while, according to the material and the recommendations of the Technical Sheet.

Step 2: Wipe off the penetrating liquid with a clean cloth until no residue is left. To make cleaning easier, some Cleaning Liquid can be sprayed on the cloth.

Step 3: Apply the Revealer Liquid (white background) and let it sit. If there are any defects the Penetrating Liquid will be revealed on the white background. If after waiting for some time only the color white remains, the presence of defects on the surface can be discarded, although there may be sub-surface defects that can only be detected with other techniques.

Step 4: Clean the inspected area with the Cleaning Liquid

Fluorescent Liquids

Step 1: Clean the inspected area with the Cleaning Liquid.

Step 2: Spray the Fluorescent Penetrating Liquid and let it sit according to the Technical Sheet and the material to be inspected.

Step 3: wipe off the penetrating liquid with a clean cloth until no residue is left. To make cleaning easier, some Cleaning Liquid can be sprayed on the cloth.

Step 4: The inspected area must be dark and a black light lamp should be applied over it. If there are any defects the Penetrating Liquid will be relealed by the black light. If after waiting for some time only the color white remains, the presence of defects on the surface can be discarded, although there may be sub-surface defects that can only be detected with other techniques.

Step 4: Clean the inspected area with the Cleaning Liquid

The visual inspection of the welds is an indispensable requirement for all the welds that are done during a proyect, under any international code.

A Welding Inspector certified by AWS as CWI can serve both as an Inspector in a welding project and as a Welding Coordinator. This inspector has demonstrated sufficient knowledge and skill after an official practical exam in Visual Inspection by the American Welding Society. The ASNT (American Society for Non Destructive Testing) recognizes the reciprocity of this exam and, without the need of another examen, grants the applicant, with the justification of his certification as CWI, the additional certification as Visual Inspector Level 2.

The visual inspection must be carried out BEFORE starting the welding process, DURING the whole process and AFTER the ending of the process. In order to carry it out, it is necessary to have enough light, measuring gauges and to check the essential parameters: thickness of the materials, preparation of the joint, dimensions of the welding passes and of the final cords, electrical parameters, dimensions of discontinuities,…

To carry out the visual inspection we have prepared this basic welding gauge case, essential for a Welding Inspection / Coordination:
